The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier

Jerry is a freshman at Trinity School, a prep school for boys. He wants to be on the football team. But he becomes the target of the school’s secret society, the Vigils, who need to sell 20,000 boxes of chocolate. The Chocolate War is a brutal book and though it was written in 1974, the topic of bullying is still as relevant today as was then. Jerry is a sympathetic character, he just wants to be accepted and find his own way. Archie is a master of intimidation, a sociopath in the making, who enjoys inflicting pain on the students of Trinity School. The brutality of the fight scenes and even the football games cannot be ignored. This is story which makes you wonder how real it is, even though you hope it isn’t.
